Q:

A: Well, EVERY waiter/waitress has their own point of view I guess. The issue is not THEIR expectations, but rather yours, and the tip is the tool in which you express that expectation. Leaving NOTHING as a tip is ALWAYS a mistake. It CAN be construed as an oversight on your part. As such, NO modification of behavior will be accomplished. The size of the tip has always been considered REASONABLY proportional to service rendered, WHATEVER that service is. Fast delivery of food, good menu advise, good catering skills, filled water glass, coffee at the proper time, cheerful attitude EVEN if all is not going well, are all part of the service contract between the customer and the server. When poor service is definitely perceived, a CORRESPONDINGLY valued tip in also in order. Remember in one of those gangster movies where the mob guys are talking about putting a hit out on one of their most hated enemies and one mobster says he would wack the guy just for the fun of it? Another wise guy reminds the group that the La Castra Nostra don't work like that. SOMEbody has to put a CONTRACT out in order for a mob hit to be done proper. So, one mobster FLICKS a 2 bit piece across the table to the anxious wacker and he catches under the cusp of his spoon. He raises the spoon to see the "financial consideration" being offered for the contract and says "consider it DONE" As one who has earned the right (a paying customer) to WACK a waiter/waitress for bad service, just leave a TOKEN of your esteem on the table in the form of a 2 bit piece (a quarter for you young folk) and they will SOON get the message. They MAY not reform, but at least they will KNOW where they stand...in the wacking order.
