Q: I have absolutely no experience in the restaurant business. I really want to see if I like the restaurant life. (i'm considering if I should be a cook) The restaurants i'm looking at are kind of upscale places. (20$+ entrees) Do you think they would take me, even though I have no experience. I'm guessing I would become the dishwasher for them. From what i've seen it says they have no openings, but do they list if they need a dishwasher..? Would they take me if they already have 2 dishwashers or so? Thanks.

A: It doesn't hurt to apply. Where I work everyone eventually learns how to do everything. If it's an upscale restaurant, there's always plenty of prep work. No matter what you have to start somewhere. I started when I was 15, as a dishwasher, not knowing anything. Then they put me on as a waitress within a year, I was very shy, but had no choice. Within a month I was in the hospital with ulcer's. Now 45 years later I'm top waitress, love it, and manager!! Of course not the same establishment, but I started out small. If I could do it so can you. Just remember work like you would like your employee's to work for you, if you owned it. Good Luck!! ET
